VB-1 is non-toxic, it's not harmful to get on your skin, and there is absolutely no fumes or nasty smell to deal with. I get it directly from Cascade, so at the wholesale price per gallon, the extra cost per application (speaker cabinet or woofer frames) is minimal. The benefits are much greater than the small initial cost. I used to use adhesive-backed asphalt or vinyl based sheets on the interior walls of my cabinets. As far as damping properties go, the VB-1 is superior. It also sticks better, and is easier to apply.

John Stockman (custom) > The hi-pass x-over for an Audax TM020J3 tweeter. This is a design by Lou C. and is called the "Azurite". It will use 2 Vifa BC11 4.5" woofers in an MTM alignment. If you check pages 4 and 5 of this gallery, you'll see I've FINALLY got the cabinets together for these speakers.

John Stockman (custom) > Just another view of the high-pass section optimized for the Focal TC90td5. I used an Axon cap for the 2.7uf cap, and a Solen for the 4.7uf. A Mills NI resistor is for the series portion of the L-pad, for better sound. I had some left-over Axon caps, and wanted to use up all of them before I ordered more of the Solens. The inductors I use are Jantzen, made in Denmark. The quality of the coils is excellent, and they are less expensive than the other brands.

This is going to work much better than the original set-up where I tried to combine the Focal tweeter and Definitive woofer using a 2nd order network @3500Hz.

John Stockman (custom) > A close-up of the VB-1 on the basket. When it dries, it turns the light gray color. There's also VB-1x, a sprayable version of the VB-1, which turns black when it dries. For this particular situation, the thicker VB-1 is better to use. I can apply it with just a putty knife or brush, and I don't have to do any tedious masking.

Here's my bright idea of actually coating the frame and magnet of the driver, and the back of the terminal, with Cascade Audio Engineering's VB-1 damping compound. I use this stuff on the interior walls of all my cabinets to reduce resonance, why not put some on the frame/magnet? This is more of a "budget" driver, so it doesn't have a thick, cast basket like some more expensive woofers. The frame is just stamped steel, not exactly ideal. I read in one of Zalytron's catalogs how they sometimes coated the frames and magnets of certain woofers with some kind of boro-silicate stuff, for its' ability to reduce the vibrations of the woofer frame. No measurements were provided, just the consensus from listeners that the bass/mid-range clarity and smoothness had improved enough to be noticed. So, here it is, 2 coats for 1/8" thickness. It sticks like glue, so it won't come off...it can't hurt, right? Yes, I'm a total speaker dork!
