John Stockman (custom) > Made these for a friend who has a Blazer. Pretty simple...I downsized the dimensions that I used for a 10" sub box that I made for my truck. It's a Toyota X-cab, but not much room behind the seats. It just has that shelf back there, so I made a wedge-shaped box to fit. These boxes have an 8" woofer and a small horn tweeter (on the top). XO is a coil for the woofer and a cap w/resistor for the tweeter. My friend already had the woofers...I believe they're MA Audio or MTX, but I can't remember. He has these in the back with some Ultimate 6.5" 2-way component speakers up front in the doors. A Pioneer head-unit and two Legacy amps (one for front & one for the rears) round out the system.
John Stockman (custom) > These 5 photos are from Ken C. who made the speakers for his friend in the pic. I believe they are the DBP from Wayne J. I added them here so Ken could show off his great skills on the PE forum. Nice work, Ken!
John Stockman (custom) > Here's the inside of the PE kit that uses the 5.25" aluminum woofers and the silkie tweeter (MTM). I used some extra dacron batting I had laying around to cover the bare walls. The gray stuff is VB-1 from Cascade Audio. I put these together for a friend as front mains for his HT. They're wonderful speakers...well designed, great smoothness/balance, and excellent imaging.
John Stockman (custom) > Listening impressions: Dick Morgan did a super job on the XO, great work for a first pass! I noticed just a couple of things while listening, a little edge on rock guitar and orchestral violins. Dick suggested a 1 ohm resistor in series with the shunt component in both the high and low pass XO leg (in series with the coil in the tweeter circuit and in series with the cap for the woofer). This will relax the voicing and the presence, and help to better define the imaging. Even as they are, the sound is superb! The nuances and detail of the highs and mids are fantastic...I can hardly wait to add the resistors to the XO to hear the improvements. Right now, these are easily the best sounding speakers I've made yet! Big thanks to Dick M. for taking the time to help with the XO and sharing his knowledge/advice. I learned alot more about proper XO design thanks to his comments in our e-conversations.
John Stockman (custom) > It sure was time consuming getting the contact paper adhesive off!
John Stockman (custom) > I keep the cabinets wrapped in the foam sheeting to protect the gloss black finish until I'm totally done with the design. I still have some listening tests to do, and then I can decide if any changes to the XO are needed.
